Europe faces 80,000 new HIV infections in next three years, as STDs surge 03.06.2026

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) predicts approximately 80,000 new HIV infections across Europe in the next three years, alongside a significant surge in other sexually-transmitted diseases. Dr. Pamela Rendi-Wagner, ECDC's executive director, announced on Wednesday, June 3rd, that these infections, including tuberculosis and viral hepatitis, contribute to 59,000 annual deaths within the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. Rendi-Wagner also highlighted antimicrobial resistance as a major public health threat, particularly for vulnerable populations, noting it accounts for over 70 percent of four million annual hospital infections. Syphilis rates have notably increased, with notification rates more than doubling between 2015 and 2024, and newborn cases rising by nearly 80 percent from 2023 to 2024.
