Europe has replaced most US cuts within NATO, top commander says 04.07.2026

European NATO allies have largely compensated for US force reductions in war rescue plans, demonstrating enhanced European defense capabilities and a stronger alliance, according to Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe Sir John Stringer. This initiative, driven by military logic and a commitment to sensible burden-sharing, ensures that even where direct replacements are not feasible, European nations are matching US military contributions with alternative assets. The shift comes amid US President Donald Trump's critical rhetoric towards NATO and a recent announcement by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth of a review of US forces in Europe. All NATO members, including the UK, are committed to increasing defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, a goal Stringer emphasized as non-negotiable for maintaining credible deterrence and collective defense.
