European election monitor dismisses rumours of fraud in Colombia’s election 02.06.2026

The European Union's Election Observation Mission has refuted claims of fraud in Colombia's recent presidential election, stating the process was transparent, orderly, and smooth. Despite outgoing President Gustavo Petro's allegations of vote manipulation by private firms, the EU mission, comprised of 143 observers who monitored 591 polling stations, found no evidence of malfeasance. The election saw a runoff between far-right lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella, who secured 43.7 percent of the vote, and left-wing Senator Ivan Cepeda, who received 40.9 percent. While Petro questioned the preliminary count's accuracy, Cepeda has since conceded no irregularities, and de la Espriella accused Petro of attempting to undermine democracy. The EU mission expressed hope for a peaceful and democratic second round on June 21.
