Eurovision 2026: Politics collide with a blockbuster show 07.05.2026

The 2026 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, from May 12-16, faces unprecedented political controversy, primarily concerning Israel's participation amid the Gaza conflict. Over 1,100 artists signed an open letter calling for Israel's exclusion, while a counter-letter by "Creative Community for Peace" supports their inclusion. The European Broadcasting Union maintains its stance that Eurovision is a broadcasters' competition, not governmental, allowing Israel to compete. This decision has prompted boycotts from Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Iceland, and Spain, significantly impacting viewership. Additionally, Romania's song "Choke Me" sparked debate over its lyrics. Despite these challenges, the contest aims for unity under the motto "United By Music – (In) The Heart Of Europe," with Ukraine's entry "Ridnym" carrying particular cultural significance. The event will also see the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia in Bangkok on November 14.
