Ex-Commerce Minister, Six Others Indicted in $1.8m Liberia Rural Women's Fund Theft 09.04.2026

Liberia's Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Task Force has indicted seven individuals, including former Commerce Minister Mawine G. Diggs, for allegedly diverting nearly $1.82 million intended for rural women entrepreneurs. The indictment, announced Thursday, details charges of theft, economic sabotage, and criminal conspiracy, stemming from the misuse of funds appropriated in the 2023 fiscal year. Task Force Chairman Counselor Edwin Klah Martin stated that approximately 80 to 85 percent of the $1,819,469.03 allotted to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was misapplied, depriving intended beneficiaries like farmers and small businesses. The task force emphasized its evidence-based approach, refuting claims of political targeting, and highlighted ongoing efforts to retrieve assets, including a petition filed in a British court.
