Expelled from South Ossetia, Tamara Mearakishvili seeks the right to return home 07.07.2026

Akhalgori activist Tamara Mearakishvili is seeking the right to return to South Ossetia following her expulsion to Georgia in late 2025. On December 22, 2025, South Ossetian authorities opened a criminal case against her on espionage charges, alleging she passed information regarding strategic sites. Despite a court order for her expulsion on December 31, Mearakishvili maintains her innocence, claiming the case was fabricated under former president Alan Gagloyev. She has appealed the Tskhinvali City Court ruling, but her legal efforts have been hindered by procedural obstacles and the recent death of her lawyer, Alan Bazzayev. Currently residing in Tbilisi, Mearakishvili has filed a complaint with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights against both the Russian Federation and Georgia. She seeks a public trial, the return of her documents, and an investigation into local police misconduct.
