Experts’ warning over pipeline, and power line encroachment 31.03.2026

Experts are issuing urgent warnings about the escalating dangers posed by encroachment on the Tazama oil pipeline reserve in Tanzania, with human activity and even infrastructure from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) creating significant risks. Officials highlight that individuals are illegally occupying the protected corridor, often with the complicity of local leaders who collect rent and levies, leading to the construction of homes and businesses within the danger zone. Despite assurances of government inspections and follow-up actions by Tazama, enforcement remains weak, and inspectors face challenges persuading encroachers and dealing with corruption. Legal experts and disaster management specialists emphasize that this situation is a preventable man-made disaster, urging for stronger accountability, adherence to laws, and proactive measures like fencing and public education to avert potential catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and environmental damage.
