F-35: US manufacturer seeks to benefit from Swiss industry and promises more offset deals in return 07.07.2026

The US defense corporation Lockheed Martin plans to significantly increase its participation in Swiss offset projects as part of the F-35 deal. Instead of the originally agreed 60 percent, the corporation now intends to compensate 73 percent of the contract value in Switzerland to strengthen domestic industry and research in security-relevant sectors. This includes projects such as the development of training ammunition at Rheinmetall in Zurich, as well as the promotion of chip production and sustainable fuels. Despite the benefits for the Swiss economy, high costs arise, as the compensation deals are included in the purchase price of approximately 6 billion francs. While Armasuisse prioritizes the acquisition of expertise through RUAG, the exact number of jets to be assembled in Switzerland remains open. At the same time, head of procurement Urs Loher is calling for a relaxation of the Weapons Export Act to secure national defense capabilities and the domestic defense industry in the long term.
