Facing uproar, Netanyahu announces ‘mega-plan’ for Israel’s battered north 03.06.2026

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a 13 billion shekel "mega-plan" on June 2 to revitalize northern communities along the Lebanon border, which have been targeted by Hezbollah. This new funding is in addition to 7 billion shekels already allocated, bringing the total investment to 20 billion shekels. The plan includes deploying 1,800 new public shelters and renovating 500 existing ones, subsidizing safe rooms in homes within 9km of the border, and improving infrastructure for health, transport, education, tourism, and job opportunities to attract 100,000 new residents. This initiative comes amid criticism from opposition leaders who accuse the government of neglecting the region.
