Farmer Victor Camilleri, 67, is grappling with the aftermath of a massive explosion at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory in Salina, Malta, on June 1. The blast, which occurred at around 6:30 am, injured Camilleri and his son, and devastated his 15 tumoli of agricultural land. The fields are now strewn with large boulders, smaller stones, and fireworks debris, destroying crops like tomatoes, pumpkins, and vines, as well as irrigation pipes and buildings. Camilleri, who worked the land for 20 years, recalls the terrifying moment the explosion threw him and collapsed a room he sought shelter in. He and his sons survived by taking cover in a wooden spool and a cave-like recess.
