Faye appoints cabinet despite Sonko's Pastef boycott threat 03.06.2026

Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed a new 30-member government led by Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô, despite significant internal party dissent. Ousmane Sonko's Pastef party, which holds a parliamentary majority, initially threatened to boycott the cabinet formation due to "points of disagreement" regarding its composition and the future role of Pastef. Notably, five Pastef members ultimately accepted ministerial positions, defying the party's directive and facing potential expulsion. The new cabinet includes Cheikh Diba remaining as Finance and Economy Minister, amidst ongoing negotiations with the IMF for a crucial $1.8 billion lending program, which was frozen due to the previous government's misreporting of debt. This political tension follows Faye's dismissal of Sonko as Prime Minister and Sonko's subsequent election as National Assembly president, exacerbating Senegal's political uncertainty and financial crisis.
