The FDA has classified the recall of Utz’s Dirty and Zapp’s potato chips as a Class 1, the most serious category, due to potential Salmonella contamination stemming from powdered milk. This ingredient was supplied by California Dairies Inc. through an unnamed third party. Utz initiated a voluntary recall on May 4, 2026, for affected chip varieties, including Bayou Blackened Ranch, Big Cheezy, Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion flavors. While Utz has reported no adverse health consequences, a Class 1 recall indicates a reasonable probability of serious health risks or death from consuming the product.
