Fears for rivers as flows 'exceptionally low' 24.06.2026

The Environment Agency’s latest monthly report found that the rivers Yare, Bure, Wissey, Ely Ouse, and Waveney—flowing through Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire—are all at "exceptionally low" levels. Only two waterways in East Anglia, the Heacham and Burn in west Norfolk, have normal flows after a prolonged dry period. These low levels follow May data showing eight rivers below normal, six "notably low," and five "exceptionally low," while nationally just over half of key indicator sites were below normal for the time of year. The region is currently under an amber heat warning with temperatures expected to reach 40°C, and the Met Office warns of an increased chance of heatwaves due to El Niño.
