Fears over fragile truce as Cambodia says Thailand is still occupying civilian areas 14.01.2026

Cambodia's Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has voiced concerns that Thailand is still occupying civilian areas along their disputed border, threatening a fragile truce established after two clashes in 2011. Sokhonn stated that approximately 4,000 Cambodian families remain displaced due to these incursions, which include barricades of barbed wire and shipping containers. Despite a December agreement to end weeks of fighting that killed 101 people and displaced over half a million, Cambodia is pushing for a meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission to address the occupied villages and allow displaced civilians to return home. Thailand, however, has dismissed these accusations as "baseless," asserting that troop positions are in compliance with de-escalation measures and not territorial occupation, while awaiting the formation of a new government to finalize talks.
