FG Approves Policy To Curb Misuse Of Honorary Degrees 23h ago

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a new policy to address the increasing misuse and politicization of honorary degrees, particularly concerning public officials. Announced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, the policy introduces stringent eligibility criteria for universities and requires clearance from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for all honorary degree conferments. Universities not offering PhD programs will be prohibited from awarding honorary doctorate degrees, with vice-chancellors facing sanctions for violations. This framework, effective April 20, aims to restore integrity and credibility to Nigeria’s higher education system by ensuring only deserving individuals receive such honors and that individuals falsely claiming degrees face prosecution.
