Fifth Castor container with nuclear waste on its way to Ahaus 07.07.2026

A fifth Castor container containing highly radioactive fuel rods is currently being transported from the former research reactor in Jülich to the interim storage facility in Ahaus. The heavy-duty transport is being carried out in a convoy protected by hundreds of police officers, with sections of the autobahn in the Rhineland and Münsterland being temporarily closed. The approximately 170-kilometer route is expected to take four hours. Despite announced protests by groups such as "Stop Westcastor," previous transports have proceeded without incident. A total of 152 containers are to be relocated to Ahaus, as the storage facility in Jülich must be vacated due to a lack of earthquake safety. A loaded container weighs around 27 tons, while the entire semi-trailer weighs nearly 130 tons. The company Orano has applied for an extension of the transport permit until August 2028 to complete the entire relocation of the radioactive legacy waste.
