In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the perceived threat from Russia, Finland has begun testing its crisis shelters. Approximately fifty Finnish citizens participated in a 24-hour simulation in early January in Helsinki, staying in a bunker equipped with bunk beds to assess its functionality and identify potential issues. Volunteers like Jan and Karolina practiced operating the air pump, essential for breathing if the electric motor fails, highlighting the need for organized self-governance within the confined space. These tests, which have moved beyond purely technical checks, aim to prepare the population for worst-case scenarios, with organizers noting constraints such as prohibitions on pets and smoking to maintain air quality within the limited 60 m² space.
