Fire and Rescue Dept DG: 114 drowning deaths so far this year 03.06.2026

The Fire and Rescue Department has reported a concerning 114 drowning deaths nationwide so far this year, with males constituting the majority of victims at 102, while 12 were females across various age demographics. Children aged up to six accounted for three fatalities, 53 victims were between seven and 19 years old, 31 were aged 20 to 39, 20 were between 40 and 59, and seven were 60 and above. Director-General Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad highlighted that rivers and irrigation canals were the sites of the most incidents, with 68 cases, followed by beaches (25), lakes and mining pools (11), waterfalls and rapids (seven), and culverts (two). He expressed alarm at the recent increase in drownings, particularly as a long holiday period approaches, and urged the public to exercise vigilance and closely monitor family members during outdoor activities.
