Fire at the regional landfill near Rakitnitsa brought under control (PHOTOS) 07.07.2026

The fire at the Regional Waste Management Center near the village of Rakitnitsa, Stara Zagora region, has been brought under control, and there is currently no danger to surrounding settlements. 16 firefighters from Stara Zagora and Chirpan are participating in the firefighting efforts, supported by three fire engines, water tankers, and heavy machinery. Despite being brought under control, firefighting will continue throughout the night due to the great depth of the landfill, which makes the terrain extremely difficult to manage. Stara Zagora Municipality confirmed that there are no casualties, and no smoke has been observed in the villages of Rakitnitsa and Bogomilovo. The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIOSV) has deployed a mobile air monitoring station, which will remain on-site for 72 hours. The causes of the incident, which occurred in the first cell of the landfill, are being investigated, with versions of spontaneous combustion due to improperly discarded batteries being considered.
