First AI cameras targeting mobile phone use in Nicosia - They will "turn a blind eye" to other offenses 07.07.2026

The Police are planning the first pilot implementation of artificial intelligence technology in Nicosia, with the first installation to take place on Griva Dighenis Avenue. The system will detect drivers using mobile phones while driving, focusing on distraction. In the initial stage, the application will operate on a trial basis without the issuance of fines, while the final confirmation of violations will be made by police officers following a check by a company supervisor. In the event of violations, the fine will amount to €300 and will be accompanied by three penalty points, subject to legislative amendments. The Police assured that the use of the cameras will be limited exclusively to detecting this specific violation, protecting drivers' privacy and avoiding the recording of personal moments. Additionally, the implementation of an average speed system on highways is being considered.
