The Traffic Police have decided to install the first two stationary artificial intelligence (AI) cameras in Nicosia, on Griva Dighenis Avenue in the Engomi area. The new cameras will replace old, non-functional devices and will operate as a pilot program aimed at recording mobile phone use while driving. The system will use algorithms to identify drivers who are not holding the steering wheel, while the verification process will be conducted by an operator. This initiative by the Ministry of Transport, led by Minister Alexis Vafiadis, aims to reduce fatalities, as mobile phone distraction is the primary cause of road deaths. In the event of a violation, a fine will be issued, and the measure may potentially be expanded to other locations within the cities.
