First development in Żurrieq's Nigret area recommended for approval 07.07.2026

A Planning Authority case officer has recommended approving the first major development in Żurrieq’s Nigret area, despite receiving 323 formal objections. The application, submitted by Josef Dimech and JS Dimech, proposes converting agricultural land into a complex featuring 12 apartments, four maisonettes, four penthouses, and basement garages. Residents and environmental advocates, including the group Il-Kollettiv, argue the project will cause irreversible urbanization and the loss of permeable land essential for water absorption. While Prime Minister Robert Abela previously promised to find solutions for the area, and Lands Minister Owen Bonnici suggested construction could occur if context is respected, critics claim the project requires roads on public land. Furthermore, objectors expressed frustration that the Planning Authority dismissed their concerns as mere civil matters, failing to suspend the application despite repeated warnings regarding the area's preservation.
