Five countries elected non-permanent members of UN Security Council 04.06.2026

The United Nations General Assembly has elected five new non-permanent members to the 15-member Security Council, which begins its two-year term on January 1, 2027. Zimbabwe secured its seat unopposed for the African Group, while Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, and Trinidad and Tobago were elected for the Western European and Others Group, with Germany narrowly missing out. This marks a significant moment for Kyrgyzstan, as it will be its inaugural term on the Security Council since its UN membership in 1992. These new members will replace Somalia, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama, whose terms conclude at the end of 2026. The Security Council, the UN body capable of imposing sanctions and authorizing force, will see continuity from Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia, who remain until the end of 2027.
