Flooding could impact more than 88 million as storms threaten multiple states 08.06.2026

Over 88 million people in the central United States face potential flooding as severe storms are forecast to move across the Midwest and northern Plains this week. Flood watches are in effect for approximately 20 million people in states including Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. The National Weather Service warns of heavy rainfall, potentially up to 8 inches in some areas, which could lead to flash flooding, especially in regions already saturated. These storms follow weekend weather that caused at least one death in New York City from a falling tree and damaged homes in Pittsburgh due to strong winds. Severe storms in the central Plains may also bring large hail, severe wind gusts, and tornadoes.
