Florida surgeon accused of removing wrong organ from patient ‘forever traumatized’ 07.05.2026

Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, a Florida surgeon, faces a second-degree manslaughter charge for the August 2024 death of 70-year-old patient William Bryan, who died during an operation where the doctor allegedly removed the patient's liver instead of their spleen. In a deposition, Shaknovsky stated he was "forever traumatized" by the event, explaining that an enlarged colon and blood in the abdomen obstructed his view, leading to profuse bleeding and cardiac arrest. He described struggling to locate the source of the bleeding. Florida's Health Department report, however, suggests concerns about Shaknovsky's skill level, noting that operating room staff were shocked to see the liver identified as a spleen, and that the organs are anatomically distinct.
