Food poisoning at football tournament leads 50 people to hospital in Caldas da Rainha 07.07.2026

Jornal de Notícias

About 50 people, most of them youths between the ages of 15 and 17, were hospitalized in Caldas da Rainha due to symptoms of food poisoning, such as vomiting and diarrhea. The outbreak, which began on Monday night, is related to the international youth football tournament "Footmania," although not all those affected are linked to the event. The Mayor, Vítor Marques, reported that the Public Health Unit and ASAE (Economic and Food Safety Authority) are investigating the causes, and an inspection of the food processing has already been conducted without detecting immediate problems. Authorities have already ruled out issues with the local water network or the Óbidos Lagoon. Currently, most patients have already been discharged, and authorities are working together to identify the responsible agent through epidemiological inquiries and laboratory analyses.
