The United Kingdom recorded its hottest summer since records began in 1884, with an average temperature of 16.5°C, surpassing the previous record set last year by 0.4°C. According to the Met Office, human-induced climate change made this extreme weather approximately 130 times more likely, with such conditions naturally occurring only once in over 1,000 years. Dr Mark McCarthy, head of climate attribution at the Met Office, noted that due to ongoing fossil fuel emissions, such heatwaves should now be expected as a one-in-nine-year event.
