The Black Rock City Municipal Airport at Burning Man, located in the Nevada desert, transforms into a bustling hub for one week annually, claiming to be among the busiest airports in the nation. Unlike conventional airports, it lacks security screening, baggage claim, and rideshare services, operating instead with volunteer air traffic controllers in cowboy hats working from a shipping container. The airport has been formally recognized since 2003, but pilots have landed on the dry lakebed since 1991. Its two mile-long runways are packed-down sections of the dusty lakebed, and the facility serves multiple purposes: charter flights from California or Reno, private jet landings, medical evacuation, and free scenic flights "gifted" by pilots to attendees.
