Force bosses to face MPs over maternity scandal, says Streeting 04.07.2026

Former health secretary Wes Streeting is calling for senior staff who refused to cooperate with the Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust maternity scandal review to be summoned before Parliament. The review, led by Donna Ockenden, found hundreds of babies and mothers suffered avoidable harm, with 66 senior NUH colleagues approached, but only 35 interviewed. Streeting described the non-cooperation as "cowardice" and an "insult" to affected families, urging the health and social care select committee to compel these individuals to testify. Whistleblower Jack Hawkins expressed concern that such parliamentary inquiries might jeopardize ongoing police investigations, advocating instead for a statutory public inquiry with compelled evidence. The scandal, which began its review in 2022, involved around 2,500 families and 800 staff, with Ockenden noting significant knowledge gaps due to senior management's refusal to participate.
