Roger Vangheluwe, the former Bishop of Bruges, died on July 1 at the age of 89. His death was announced today by the Belgian Bishops' Conference, which stated that he was buried in "strict privacy." Vangheluwe had been a beloved bishop for 25 years, known for his progressive stances, such as advocating for a greater role for women in the Church, as well as conservative views on homosexuality. Ironically, he spoke out against child abuse within the Church.
