Former NASA chief turned ULA lobbyist seeks law to limit SpaceX funding 02.03.2026

Ars Technica

Former NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, now a lobbyist for United Launch Alliance (ULA), expressed encouragement regarding proposed legislation in the US Congress that would cap NASA's launch funding for any single provider at 50 percent. Bridenstine, writing on LinkedIn, stated this move would strengthen America's industrial base by fostering competition, innovation, and redundancy in civil and national security space missions. The provision, appearing in the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2025 and championed by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, is seen as a measure to protect smaller manufacturers and suppliers. This legislation could significantly impact SpaceX, which currently dominates NASA's launch services, including its sole crewed vehicle to the ISS, Dragon, and a majority of science missions, potentially limiting its future contracts for lunar missions. Bridenstine's firm, The Artemis Group, received $990,000 from ULA in 2025, representing nearly a third of its total lobbying revenue.
