Four-acre traveller site 'illegally built at weekend' 06.05.2026

Residents of Willows Green, near Felsted in Essex, reported a "military operation"-like construction of a four-acre unauthorised traveller site that began Friday, coinciding with the Uttlesford District Council's bank holiday closure. Within three to four days, about 30 lorries delivered materials under cover of darkness, concreted the field, and pitched caravans, causing significant community upset and allegations of ecological disregard. The council stated it is aware and assessing the activity. Traveller rights campaigner Sherrie Smith explained that the land-owning cousins, who want a better future for their children, faced systemic planning discrimination and had apologised for any disruption. However, Braintree MP Sir James Cleverly claimed they were "gaming the system" by exploiting enforcement gaps outside working hours. Drone footage shows fenced plots, and residents describe high stress and intimidation. Council is gathering evidence for enforcement, with meeting papers indicating a need for 35 traveller pitches in the district.
