Türkiye detains 88 over alleged links to 2016 failed coup 1d ago

Xinhua News

Turkish authorities have detained 88 suspects in two separate investigations linked to the Gulen movement, which Ankara accuses of orchestrating the 2016 failed coup attempt. In Kayseri, 70 suspects were apprehended in simultaneous raids across Kayseri, Istanbul, Adana, and Mersin following an eight-month surveillance operation involving 144 teams and 676 personnel. During these raids, authorities seized concealed recording devices, unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and organizational documents. A separate investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office led to the detention of 18 additional suspects, including 16 public officials, across eight provinces. Two of these individuals are alleged to have held senior roles within the organization. The Turkish government holds Fethullah Gulen, who lived in self-exile in the United States until his death in 2024, responsible for the July 2016 coup attempt that resulted in over 250 deaths and 2,200 injuries.
