France: Marine Le Pen Announces Candidacy for 2027 Presidential Election 07.07.2026

Zeit

French right-wing populist Marine Le Pen has announced her intention to participate in the 2027 presidential election despite a recent appellate court ruling. Although the court upheld her conviction for the embezzlement of EU funds, it allowed her to run for office while requiring her to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. Speaking to the broadcaster TF1, Le Pen emphasized that she intends to conduct her campaign explicitly without the bracelet and plans to appeal the decision. Alongside Jordan Bardella, she aims to run as a political duo and intends to launch her campaign soon. Should she win the election, Le Pen intends to appoint Bardella as head of government. The court mitigated the sentence to preserve the freedom to stand for election, but upheld the three-year prison sentence and the fine of 100,000 euros.
