Frankreich Alte Weihnachtsbäume als Dünen-Verstärkung 21.02.2026

In Gouville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, and other coastal areas like Carcans in the Southwest, old Christmas trees are being repurposed to reinforce sand dunes and combat coastal erosion. Oyster farmer and mayor Francois Legras explained that the trees act as natural barriers, trapping sand blown by the wind, thus negating the need for concrete or gravel blocks. This initiative, supported by around 20 volunteers from the coastal protection association Trait de Côte, involves anchoring the trees at the base of the dunes. While this method has successfully helped regain four to five meters of dune in some areas, it requires annual replenishment and significant investment in foundational structures like log fences, which can cost up to €120,000 annually for complete renewal. The effort is crucial for protecting oyster farming operations and the local tourism industry, which relies on the picturesque dune landscape and its beach cabins.
