A 37-year-old experienced mountaineer has appealed his conviction for the grossly negligent homicide of his 33-year-old girlfriend, who froze to death in January 2025 during a winter ascent of Austria's highest mountain, Großglockner. The Landesgericht Innsbruck found him guilty last week, imposing a 9600 Euro fine and a five-month suspended sentence. The court determined he failed his responsibility, inadequately planned the tour, didn't inform his less experienced partner of challenges, and delayed an emergency call when she became incapacitated near the 3798-meter summit. Both the convicted man and the prosecution have lodged appeals against the verdict, which will now be decided by the Oberlandesgericht Innsbruck.
