Freiheit für politische Gefangene Amnestiegesetz in Venezuela verabschiedet 20.02.2026

The Venezuelan Parliament has unanimously passed an amnesty law intended to free hundreds of political prisoners, with interim President Delcy Rodríguez immediately enacting it. This legislation aims to cover accusations made since 1999 against political opponents of Presidents Nicolás Maduro and Hugo Chávez, including charges related to protest participation or spreading "hate." However, significant exceptions exist, notably excluding individuals accused or convicted of inciting military action against Venezuela, which could impact opposition leader María Corina Machado. Despite these exclusions, a close ally of Machado, Juan Pablo Guanipa, was released shortly after the law's passage, having been detained for conspiracy and previously under house arrest. The United States had previously urged Rodríguez to release political prisoners and pass such a law following Maduro's capture. According to the NGO Foro Penal, approximately 450 political prisoners have been released, with over 600 still incarcerated.
