Tómas Þór Þórðarson, a substitute Member of Parliament for the Independence Party, has emphasized that even if children and families with children are not housed in an exit facility, as suggested by the majority of the Althing's General and Education Committee, their deprivation of liberty remains unchanged. He argues that this proposed change might appear to be a cosmetic improvement but does not alter the fact that these individuals would still be detained elsewhere, potentially for up to three days. The committee's opinion, which is expected to detail how children and families will be accommodated, will not be published until after the local elections, a timing Tómas Þór suggests is not coincidental, implying it's a strategic move by the Social Democratic Alliance due to the issue's political sensitivity. The Ministry of Justice proposed this amendment, aiming to address concerns about the separation of families with children from others and to reinforce children's rights during detention, specifying a maximum of three days, extendable to nine under special circumstances, for children accompanied by their families, while prohibiting the detention of unaccompanied minors.
