French archives of Spaniards who fled Franco's dictatorship are now available online 01.04.2026

The French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA) has made its "Spanish file" archives publicly available online as of Monday, March 30. This extensive collection documents the experiences of over 185,000 Spanish individuals who sought asylum in France, fleeing Franco's dictatorship. Housed at OFPRA's headquarters in Fontenay-sous-Bois, the archives consist of alphabetically organized index cards detailing personal information such as places of birth, French addresses, marital status, professions, and the reasons for their anti-Franco commitment. These records offer a comprehensive insight into the largest refugee movement France has ever received, spanning 40 years of exile and detailing the protection granted by the French state to those escaping fascism.
