French supermarkets still hooked on plastic despite waste goals: report 06.05.2026

A recent investigation by consumer group Que Choisir Ensemble and NGO No Plastic In My Sea reveals that French supermarkets are failing to meet single-use plastic reduction targets set by the country's anti-waste laws, despite commitments to do so. A survey of 1,659 stores across 11 major chains, including Carrefour and Lidl, found that plastic packaging remains prevalent, particularly for bottled water, fruit, vegetables, and ready-to-cook produce. The water and drinks sector contributes nearly 40% of single-use plastic, with bottled water sales increasing and mini-format bottles being a significant concern. The report criticizes the lack of comprehensive strategies to achieve legal targets for plastic bottle reduction by 2030 and notes a decline in the availability of bulk sections.
