French wine made in late 1890s and hidden under Czech castle lovingly restored 02.06.2026

Eight bottles of Chateau d'Yquem, a rare French wine dating from the late 1890s, have been meticulously restored by the chateau itself after being discovered hidden under the floorboards of Becov nad Teplou castle in the Czech Republic. The collection of 136 bottles, including these eight precious wines, was hidden by the noble Beaufort-Spontin family when they fled Czechoslovakia at the end of World War II. Rediscovered in the 1980s and again in stock-taking a decade ago, the wine's preservation is attributed to its high sugar content. The cellar master described the restoration process and tasting as a "magical experience" of uncovering "liquid memory," with the reconditioned bottles, valued potentially at millions, set for exhibition rather than auction.
