Fungal strains in space spark worry 07.05.2026

NASA has identified fungal strains capable of surviving rigorous sterilization procedures, raising concerns about the potential contamination of celestial bodies with Earth-based microbes. This discovery complicates future astrobiological missions, particularly to Mars, Enceladus, Europa, and Titan, which are considered plausible candidates for harboring extraterrestrial life. The persistence of these resilient fungi suggests that past missions may have already introduced terrestrial life to Mars. Furthermore, even probes not initially designed for potential life-bearing environments, such as the Cassini-Huygens orbiter which visited Saturn's moon Titan in 2004, could have inadvertently seeded these worlds, highlighting the challenges in preventing biological contamination in space exploration.
