Gang leader "Black Cat" arrested over 19 killings in Honduras 03.06.2026

Honduran authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of Carlos Molina, also known as "El Gato Negro" or the Black Cat, who they suspect masterminded the killing of 19 workers at a palm plantation in Rigores on May 19. The massacre occurred in the Bajo Aguan region, an area notorious for gang violence and conflict over palm farms and drug routes. While Molina, 27, is believed to have planned and supplied resources for the attack, the six individuals who allegedly carried out the killings remain at large. This arrest follows a period of intensified efforts by Honduras to combat rampant criminal violence, with lawmakers approving reforms that allow military participation in public security and the creation of an anti-organized crime unit, alongside the potential categorization of gangs as terrorist groups. The U.S. has been actively pressuring Latin American nations to intensify their crackdown on criminal organizations.
