Gauteng metro police officer allegedly took R1.5 million in cash bribes in a single day 08.09.2026

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s written parliamentary reply has revealed that a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer allegedly took more than R1.5 million in cash bribes in a single day. The reply, responding to questions from Democratic Alliance (DA) MPL Sergio dos Santos, detailed corruption across the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), JMPD, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), and Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD). JMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit investigated 185 members for fraud and corruption between January 2022 and April 2026, with 47 suspended or reassigned and 17 dismissed. The department could not specify the total amount solicited, as some extortion attempts were incomplete, but highlighted the R1.5 million incident without providing further details on when it occurred, how the money was obtained, or the outcome of any criminal investigation.
