Gaza’s unseen casualties: A surge in stillbirths and birth defects 11h ago

In Gaza, a neonatal unit at Nasser Hospital is witnessing a disturbing surge in newborns suffering from severe congenital anomalies, a phenomenon health officials attribute to the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict. Infants like Osama, born with heart defects and brain abnormalities, and Ahmed, showing signs of hydrocephalus, are among those fighting for survival under dire circumstances. Mothers describe exhausting pregnancies marked by extreme hunger, lack of safe water, and intense stress, leading to premature births. The Ministry of Health reports a doubling of congenital anomaly cases and a 140 percent increase in stillbirths between 2022 and 2025, alongside a 50 percent rise in neonatal deaths. Doctors warn that depleted medical resources mean many of these critically ill infants cannot be treated, highlighting the war's lingering, unseen casualties.
