GEMS lowers 2026 medical aid increases 07.05.2026

The Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) has further reduced its projected contribution increases for 2026 to 7.5%, a decrease from the previously announced 9.8% in January and 9.5% in February. These new rates, effective July 1, 2026, aim to alleviate financial pressure on public servants grappling with increased living costs. GEMS principal officer Stan Moloabi emphasized the scheme's commitment to members' well-being and long-term sustainability. This decision followed a comprehensive review of GEMS's financial health, consultations with government and labor unions, and actuarial advice. Enhanced claims management, cost control, and internal system improvements have enabled GEMS to lower increases while continuing to monitor rising healthcare expenses and combat fraud.
