George Town celebrates 18 years as a Unesco world heritage site 07.07.2026

Since its inscription as a Unesco World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008, George Town has evolved into a thriving living heritage city. Celebrating 18 years of recognition, the city has successfully balanced the preservation of its Outstanding Universal Value with modern economic development. Through adaptive reuse, historic buildings have been transformed into boutique hotels, museums, and galleries, revitalizing the urban landscape. Penang leaders, including Jason H’ng Mooi Lye and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, emphasized that the city's strength lies in its multicultural traditions and community unity. To support conservation, the state government provides significant financial incentives, offering up to RM200,000 for Category I heritage buildings and RM50,000 for Category II structures. This collaborative approach between government bodies and the community ensures that George Town remains a global benchmark for sustainable urban heritage management and cultural continuity.
