The German federal government is considering a reshuffling of its key economic advisory body, the Council of Economic Experts, as the term of one of its members, economist Ulrike Malmendier, expires on February 28. While reappointments are possible, reports suggest internal government resistance, particularly from the CDU, to extending Malmendier's tenure. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs stated its interest in quickly resolving the personnel issue, emphasizing the need for expertise in macroeconomics, trade policy, and fiscal policy to address current economic challenges. Malmendier, who joined the five-member council in 2022 and specializes in capital markets and behavioral economics, has previously advocated for measures like an energy solidarity surcharge and stricter inheritance tax. This situation follows previous instances of stalled reappointments, such as Lars Feld's departure in 2021.
