Germany grants citizenship to record number of people in 2025; Syrians top list 03.06.2026

Germany achieved a record high in naturalizations in 2025, granting citizenship to 332,500 individuals, a 14% increase from the previous year. Syrians constituted the largest group for the fifth consecutive year, representing one in five naturalized individuals, although their numbers decreased by 21% compared to 2024. This overall surge is largely attributed to citizenship law reforms implemented in June 2024, which shortened the residency requirement from eight to five years and permitted dual citizenship. Following Syrians, Turks and Russians were the next largest groups to gain citizenship. Significant growth was also observed for Bosnians, Americans, and Albanians, while naturalizations through restitution laws saw a 61% rise.
