Gesetzliche Krankenkassen Kassenärzte wollen freiwillige Leistungen streichen 23.02.2026

Andreas Gassen, chairman of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), has called for the complete abolition of voluntary benefits offered by statutory health insurance funds, citing the need for savings within the healthcare system. These "nice to have" services, which include treatments like homeopathy and professional dental cleanings, are often used for marketing purposes and vary between insurance providers. Gassen estimates that eliminating these benefits could save nearly one billion euros annually. This proposal comes amidst ongoing debates about reforms in Germany's statutory health insurance system, driven by significant deficits and a planned multi-billion euro austerity package from Federal Health Minister Nina Warken. The KBV represents over 189,000 physicians and psychotherapists and plays a crucial role in organizing healthcare provision for approximately 75 million insured individuals in Germany.
